...

when on 1st January 1502 portuguese navigators sailed into the bay known today as Guanabara, they thought they had discovered the delta of a huge river and named it "River January" - Rio de Janeiro. Rio is a wonderful citie. The high points in Rio are the beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra da Tijuca, the exquisitely beautiful woman, the largest football stadium in the world, the Corcovado, the Sugarloaf and - above everything else - the world famous carnival...

..thats Carnaval!!..

come on! we r gonna show the greatest..the biggest..and the more famous show of the earth!!

The first records of Carnival festivities in Rio de Janeiro date back to 1723. Immigrants from the Portuguese islands of Açores, Madeira and Cabo Verde introduced here the Entrudo.
The idea was basically getting everybody soaked wet. People would go out in the streets with buckets of water and limes, and everybody could be a potential victim. Even Emperors took part in the fun. There's a curious record of a woman being arrested in 1855 for throwing a lime at Dom Pedro I's escorts.
Zé Pereira was a contribution of a Portuguese shoemaker named José Nogueira de Azevedo, in the mid XIX century. On Carnival Mondays he would march in the streets with his friends playing drums, tambourines, pans, and whistles. Everybody was welcome to join the fun.
Grandes Sociedades or Great Societies was a more organized parade that debuted in 1855, with the presence of the Emperor himself. A group of eighty aristocrats in masks paraded with luxury costumes, music, and flowers. It was a big success. Democráticos, Fenianos and Tenentes do Diabo were the three most well-known groups.
Cordão Carnavalesco is a concept that got its start in 1870. There were characters like queens, kings, witches, peasants and dancers, and they performed according to the costumes they were wearing. There were also the Cordões de Velhos, where participants would wear huge papier-mâché masks and walk in an old man's gait.

Carnival in the XX Century
Ranchos Carnavalescos are a contribution of an immigrant from Bahia named Hilário Jovino da Silva. They started in 1872 as working class festivity. People would dress up in costumes and perform on the parade accompanied by an orchestra of strings, ganzás, flutes, and other instruments. They were more organized than the Cordões, and gained popularity around 1911.
With the sponsorship of brewery Hanseática, the Ranchos started organized competitions. They became one of the main attractions of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, together with the Great Societies. The parade already included a first-wing (abre alas), an orchestra, a male and female choir, and a couple of mestre sala and porta bandeira.
The parades were halted during World War II and started again in 1947. By then the competition happened on Av. Rio Branco. The last competition of ranchos was in 1990, and the winner was a club named Decididos de Quintino.

lets live days of fantasy..

The Samba School Parade at Rio´s Sambodrome is something everybody has to experience at least once in life. The event is broadcast live to several countries, and all Brazilian states. Watching on TV is cool, but not half as much fun as being there. You have to mingle with the crowd, sweat, maybe even march with a samba school.
Unlike
Street Carnival the Samba Parade is not free. Tickets are actually quite expensive, but more than worth the investment. Fourteen special group schools march on Carnival Sunday and Monday, seven each night. The parade starts at 9 p.m. and goes on until sunlight the next day, around 6-7 a.m. This samba marathon is also a fierce competition. Each year a school is downgraded from special to access group, and vice-versa.

In case you are getting completely mixed up, Samba Schools are not teaching institutions. A Samba School is an association of people from the same neighborhood, usually a working class community (or favela) in a suburban area. They get together on a regular basis for rehearsals and samba nights. Samba schools provide valuable jobs to the community, that is employed year-round in the production of costumes and floats.
Each year schools choose a different theme. In the year 2000, for instance, schools highlighted different periods of Brazilian history, celebrating the country's 500th anniversary. In 2004, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sambodrome, samba schools were allowed to re-edit their favorite Carnival themes from the past.
Samba Schools may take to the Parade anything from 3,000 to 5,000 members, and from 6 to 8 floats. They try to illustrate the theme chosen. All costumes and floats are original, made from scratch each year. You may think of it as a tropical opera, or rather, of several operas happening in a one night.
A Samba School has a period ranging from 60 to 75 minutes to make it through the runway. This means that each member will actually spend only about 25-30 minutes tops in the Sambodrome. The experience is so intense, though, that the memories last a lifetime.

Several aspects are judged by a jury of experts chosen by LIESA, the league of Samba Schools. Judges are strategically stationed in odd and even sectors, to make sure the schools do their best all the way through. The 6 schools that score best earn the coveted honor of marching again the following weekend, at the Winners Parade on Saturday.
Of course all Cariocas consider themselves experts when it comes to judging a samba school. Many keep a personal score to compare (and inevitably disagree) with the final result. Cariocas support their favorite school just like they support their soccer team - with a lot of passion. In Portuguese you do not say you support Mangueira or Flamengo. You say what would translate simply to I am Mangueira or I am Flamengo.

just fantasy..

The Samba Parade

Schools are divided into alas (
wings or sections), with people wearing the same costumes. Abre-alas is the first group, limited to 15 people or less. They are in charge of greeting the audience, setting the mood, and introducing the theme. Choreographies are often quite elaborate.

In-between wings you there are
floats (carros alegóricos), that carry special guests named destaques ( floatees). Floats are a real feast to the eyes. Many have special effects - a bird with flapping wings, a dragon spitting smoke, etc. The size is limited by the narrow tree-lined streets that give access to the Sambodrome. Oversized floats would be at the risk of losing part of their decoration even before entering the runway, or getting stuck along the way.

u can do what u need to feel happy..

Floats may be motorized, and have mechanical parts. Most are still pushed by men from the community, either in T-shirts, or wearing costumes designed to blend in. Before ideas of exploitation of cheap labor and other indignities start to pop in your mind, try to understand that everybody is more than happy to contribute in whichever way they can.

to be happy.. (baianas)

Being a part of the samba parade is an honor, and these volunteers would probably look awkward in a baiana costume, anyway.

to fill ur life with colours.. (mestre-sala & porta-bandeira)

Porta-Bandeira and Mestre-Sala are the most important couple in the school. Porta-bandeira is the lady that carries the school flag with pride. Crowds stand and cheer as she passes by. Her partner, the mestre-sala, has the job of drawing everybody's attention to his queen. And they do that by performing the most elaborate samba steps ever - seeing to believing. Samba Schools also have a children-only sector. They have their own version of the porta-bandeira and mestre-sala, and their dexterity often equals or surpasses their adult counterparts.

dance... (baianas)

Ala das baianas is a wing with women dressed in big round colonial-style skirts. It is one of the most colorful and captivating of them all. These positions are reserved for ladies from the community, and their (very expensive) costumes are subsidized. Dozens of baianas spinning around always bring down the house.

more than 300 drumers..

the greatest sound on earth!!

The percussion band (bateria) and vocalist (puxador) have a big challenge to face when they walk into the Sambodrome. Getting as many as 6,000 people to sing and dance in synch is not an easy task. Everything is done live. The vocalists usually go on top of a sound car, that may be at the end of the school or next to the bateria. The drummer's niche is located between Sectors 9 and 11. This is where the band stays until the last wing and float passes by, and only then they leave the samba runway.
While an average member of a samba school marches for about 20 minutes, bands and vocalists have to perform for 70 minutes non-stop! Right in front of them you will find the
queen of bateria. They look georgeus as they introduce the band, and greet the audience. It's good manners to stand up and cheer.

Carnival in Rio

One of the most colorful events on this planet has always been the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Very spectacular is the view from a VIP Lounge, which may cost even more than 1000 US Dollar.
In addition the living costs quadruple in Rio whilst the Carnival is in full effect.

the samba avenue!!

Everybody has seen such pictures on TV, but being inside this turmoil of drums, chanting and dancing can not be compared with anything else in this world.
Between 600 and 800 drummers drive each school along the Sambódromo.
Two nights with 8 schools competing and a final clash of 8 winners is the rule.

Highly artistic performances reveal enormous talent and feeling, that has also made the Brazilian soccer the most admired in the whole wide world

Countless hours of preparations are invested each year to make it all happen and to remain as Brazil`s most popular event apart from soccer.

as a butterfly..

Even though complete nudity is not officially allowed, sometimes floats carry topless or almost-naked beauties, male and female. You get the idea: a little body paint, lots-a-glitter, a smile... The best looking men and women are selected for these special spots. The right stunt is a guaranteed headline the following day, and some do not draw a line for a chance of few seconds in the spotlight (see funny but true stories).
Other floatees have very sophisticated costumes. On the top of the float the cherry is usually a floatee in an impossibly heavy costume. They use cranes to get up there, of course. Imagine trying to climb a ladder with an extra 100 pounds on your back!

more than 3 thousand people in each samba school..

Huge pieces of art turn the Carnival into a phantasy world of it`s own.
And buying a costum for around 300 US dollar enables to join one of the 16 competing Samba Schools on the street, from which a special jury selects the winner of the season.

Somewhere I Belong
Linkin Park

(When this began)
I had nothing to say and I'd get lostin the nothingness inside of me
(I was confused)
And I let it all out to find that I'm not the only person with these things in mind
(Inside of me)
But all the vacancy the words revealed is the only real thing that I got left to feel
(Nothing to do)
Just stuck hollow and alone and the fault is my own
and the fault is my own...

I wanna heal..I wanna feel..what I thought was never real..
I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long..
(Erase all the pain until it's gone)
I wanna heal..I wanna feel..like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I Belong...

And I've got nothing to say I can't believe I didn't fall right down on my face..
(I was confused)
Look at everywhere only to find that it's not the way I had imagined I tall in my mind..
(So what am I)
What do I have but negativity because I can't justify the way everyone is looking at me
(Nothing to lose)
Nothing to gain I'm hollow and alone and the fault is my own..
and the fault is my own...

I wanna heal..I wanna feel..
What I thought was never real..I wanna let go of the pain I've felt so long
(Erase aaaaaaaaaall the pain until it's gone)
I wanna heal..I wanna feel..like I'm close to something real
I wanna find something I've wanted all along
Somewhere I Belong...
I will never know myself until I do this on my own,
And I will never feel anything else until my wounds are healed
I will never be anything until I break away from me
I will break away..
I'll find myself todaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay...

...burning...

im burning..it hurts..at the end ill be just ashes..and ill need to reborn again...

but we need to be survivers..life is very short to care abt people that cannot accept each other how they are..
if u have a friend in case dont u accept him/her how he/she is? yes..u need to accept them..if u are really a friend..
friends dont look for u just when u are happy..they walk besides u even when u are falling down..
i hav friends..some of them were people that nobody care before..i gave them my care..my light..my friendship..and they could keep a better way to live..
if a person that u call friend doenst care abt u when u are in your bad days..he/she cant be called as friend anymore..itll be better let he/she go away..
many people ask me how can i have so different friends...simple..i love people..i love this life..ill be always besides a friend when he/she needs me..
think abt how your friends are with u..think abt how u are with your friends..

and remember..we are nothing to judge anyone..

Wish You Were Here
by Roger Waters

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish...how I wish you were here...
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here...

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
by Roger Waters

Remember when you were young? You shone like the sun...
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine..

You reached for the secret too soon
You cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond

Well, you wore out your welcome
With random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions
Come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine..

Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far...
Shine on you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond

And we'll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday's triumph
And sail on the steel breeze
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser

Come on you miner for truth and delusion..
And
shine...
